There’s a particularly amazing thing that happens in my small town during the summer. We have around 36,000 residents. Yet, we have at least 5 theater groups, a large collection of talented musicians, and several successful bands. Every Friday, bands play downtown for free until 8:30, and then the bar down the alley starts their outside music until after midnight. It’s such a strange mix of people that come out. People of every race, socio-economic status, and age. It’s like for one day a week in the summer, we are bigger than a small town. We’re a community of listeners, dancers, and spectators to things we’ve missed throughout the rest of the year. We’re in East Central Illinois, hours from any city, but you wouldn’t know it in the summer. I’m appreciating being back home more and more. I was living on the East Coast, but I guess you always come home…
Try an Allagash White beer from Portland, Maine while listening to your favorite band. It’s a white wheat beer (like Blue Moon) that’s not too heavy. Perfect for sitting on the ground or in a cooler while you get up and dance. Get out of your house this weekend and find live music. It nourishes the soul.
